O-540 starter slip & one bank not firing need input

So I'm working on a build and stuck an O-540 in it, but the starter keeps slipping. Turns out the flywheel teeth are wrecked. I'm thinking about going with an 11-tooth/149T setup instead. Oh, and also, one side of the engine isn't firing right, even though the mags are split. Has anyone ever run into something similar?

Yupp, busted flywheel teeth would definitely cause the starter to slip, so switching to the 11-tooth/149T setup sounds like a good one. The 1-side misfire even with split mags points to a timing or ignition issue, have you checked the timing and spark on both sides carefully??

Wouldn't running a worn flywheel with a known mag issue on one side kinda raise questions about engine safety overall? At what point do you just bite the bullet and pull the whole thing apart?

At this point, would it make more sense to question whether that O-540 was airworthy to begin with? If the flywheel's trashed and one bank's not firing, how deep are you willing to chase this rabbit?
