I'm not sure if this is the right forum to ask but I just picked up a used Panther Airboat Lightning over the weekend and I'm already stressed about the logistics here in California. Is it true that the CA DMV can be a nightmare? I need to get the title transferred into my name and get it registered ASAP so I can hit the water. Is there a specific classification for airboats like the Lightning, or does it just fall under the general "motorized vessel" category? Anyone have any recent experience with this process at the CA DMV? I'm hoping it's as simple as walking in with the title and saying "register me, please," but I'm worried about extra forms and steps. Any advice on what to say or have ready would be a huge help. Congratulations on getting the Panther Lightning @ab_b3nz, what a fun machine! Don't worry about the DMV registration process. With a little preparation, you'll get through it just fine. In California, it's registered as a standard motorized vessel, since there isn't a special category for airboats. To make things easier, download the vessel application form from the DMV website and fill it out before you go. The most important thing is the signed-over California title, or 'pink slip,' from the previous owner. Do you have that ready? Once your paperwork is set, you'll be out on the water in no time.

A cousin of mine went through this process a few years ago and I don't remember him saying that the experience was terrible. He had every document he needed and he managed to get things done with 2 trips. The first one was to get all the info he needed and the second one was to go through with the process. If I remember right, he mentioned that for the second time he managed to schedule an appointment, so he didn't have to wait in line.
