buick 455 dd what to watch for & maintain

I recently purchased a 14-foot predator that is powered by a restored 1973 Buick 455. It has Stage 2 heads, an aluminum intake, and a Holley 650 dual jet, but the rest of the engine is stock, including the original bore, pistons, and rings. Lots of low-pitched grunts. Since it's a direct drive and can easily handle dry loads, I keep it below 3000 RPM. In order to keep this motor in good condition over time, I thought I'd ask the community what common issues to look out for and what preventative maintenance you would suggest.

Hey, that sounds like a fun setup!!
For a 455 that's mostly stock internally, I would suggest keeping a close watch your oil pressure especially when it's hot.
The stock oiling system can be a weak point.
An old boat like that can also benefit a lot from good quality oil and frequent changes.

Nice!!! Running it under 3000 RPM definitely helps, but staying on top of basic maintenance is the way to go. Like making sure that you do regular oil changes, keep coolant topped up and check the carb tuning now and then.

Running a 50-year-old big block on stock internals in a direct drive airboat sounds cool until a piston skirts into the sump. If you're not ready for a rebuild, don't push it dry.
